Costello on Gay Byrne's announcement

I wish to acknowledge the decision of Gay Byrne not to contest the Presidential election. Gay Byrne is one of the most distinguished broadcasters the country has ever produced. He would have been a worthy contender for the office of President.

The election campaign itself would have been the appropriate forum for debating the views of all the candidates including Gay Byrne.

I wish Gay the best of luck for the future and I look forward to years of pleasurable listening to his excellent broadcasting.

Meanwhile, Michael D Higgins continues to campaign strongly throughout the country and to articulate his vision of an inclusive society at home and a strong voice for Ireland abroad.
