Costello welcomes red c poll findings

8 September 2011

by Cllr Joe Costello

I welcome the findings of the Red C Poll commissioned by Paddy Power and published today. They demonstrate that the "silly season" of the summer months is over and that the public is beginning to reflect on the serious candidates and the relevant issues. It is encouraging that Michael D Higgins, the Labour nominated candidate, has a clear lead in the poll, some 12 percentage points ahead of the next candidate and that he also scores highest on second preferences.

Of course it is a long way to go to the 27th October. Nominations will not close until the 28th September and other candidates may yet declare.

It is also to be welcomed that two thirds of the people polled stated that they will vote in the Presidential election and that a similar percentage believe that it is important to have an elected president.

Michael D Higgins will continue to traverse the country visiting communities the length and breadth of Ireland and articulating his vision for the Presidency in the public arena.
