Costello responds to emergence of Martin Mc Guinness in Presidential race

16 September 2011

by Cllr Joe Costello

We note the decision of Sinn Fein to seek a nomination for the Presidency for Martin McGuinness. Sinn Fein, on its own, does not have the numbers required to secure a nomination and it will now be interesting to see who they turn to for the three additional names required.

All citizens are, of course, free to seek a nomination for the Presidency and the Labour Party has not obstructed the nomination of any such candidate.

Since he was nominated in June our campaign has concentrated our efforts on securing support for Michael D. In that period he has been in every county and, has addressed dozens of meetings and met tens of thousands of enthusiastic supporters.

He is clearly the front runner in the campaign and he remains the person most suited and best equipped to be President of Ireland, regardless of whoever else may be nominated.

The proposal to nominate Mr. McGuinness is the latest development that has taken many twists and turns so far, and we will be campaigning all-out, between now and October 27th to get Michael D elected.
