The results of IBAL’s latest Litter Survey, announced today, indicates that some progress is being made in tackling the scourge of litter in Dublin’s North Inner City.

The North Inner City has moved from being a “litter blackspot” to “littered.” While clearly much more improvement is still needed, the progress that has been achieved is a step in the right direction. The local community and Dublin City Council are working hard to tackle the litter problem. In particular, Phibsborough Tidy Towns and the community in Stoneybatter have been very active in cleaning up their communities. The reestablishment of the Monto festival in the North East Inner City will further help the situation.

However, the report also highlights a number of areas in the North Inner City that are a particular cause of concern. The Manor Street/Brunswick Street/Church Street area and a site on Capel Street were found to be “litter blackspots,” and the former IDA Enterprise Centre on Gardiner Street and Spencer Dock were noted as being in a particularly poor state.

Dublin City Council, local businesses, landlords and the community must work together and redouble their efforts to ensure that we achieve the local environment that the community deserves.
